Time Rallies are another new mode in GTS. The objective in those Challenges is to have a certain amount of time left on the clock before crossing the finish line. There is a total of five of these.
In a Time Rally, you have to take a race for usually two laps. You start with a certain amount of time, which is obviously running down. Whenever you hit a checkpoint on the track (which usually corresponds with the three sectors of the track), additional time will be added to your timer, allowing you to continue the race. Just like any other Race or Challenge, there will be the three medal tiers Gold, Silver, and Bronze. If you finish the race by the skin of your teeth with one second left on the clock, you will be given the Bronze medal. If you have a comfortable amount of time like 15 seconds left on the clock, you will be given the Gold medal (obviously the times are different from track to track).
